Insurance Program General Description
What insurance benefits are provided by my NFHS Coaches Association Membership?
Your membership in one of the NFHS’s Professional Associations includes a package of insurance providing you with general liability, accident medical and accidental death and dismemberment insurance. These coverages are automatically provided to you as part of your membership dues. There is no additional fee for this insurance program.
Who is covered?
- State Coaches’ associations that have 100% membership in the NFHS Coaches Association are included as additional insureds under the general liability policy.
What Activities are Covered?
Members of the NFHS Coaches Association are covered for the following activities under the insurance plan:
-
The insurance applies only for losses or claims resulting from the coaching or instructing of organized sport or activity programs. NOTE: With regard to camps, clinics and tournaments, coverage is provided to the coach only with respect to his/her coaching or instructional duties. No coverage applies to the organization, operation or sponsorship of camps, clinics or tournaments; nor does coverage extend to the participants of such events. For more information on insuring camps, clinics and tournaments, please click on Camps, Clinics and Tournaments, or contact Bollinger.
-
This insurance does not cover the coaches for classroom activities that are part of their employment as school coaches.
-
Such coaching or instruction must take place in the US or in a US territory or possession where such sport or activity is recognized by the member State High School Association or by high schools that follow the guidelines of the member state association (or NFHS Affiliate Association in US territories and possessions).
-
If a sport or activity is recognized for either boys or girls in that state, territory or possession, the coach will be covered for coaching or instructing both boys and girls. Participants must be 19 years of age or younger, or must follow the guidelines of their respective member State High School Association.
-
Coverage applies to strength coaches, but only for school activities for which the coach is employed by a member school of a State High School Association (or, if within a US territory or possession, by an NFHS Affiliate Association). The athletes must be students at the school and participate in a sport that is recognized for high school participation.
-
Coverage is not limited to high school activities. It can also apply to youth or recreational leagues and college coaching; however, the sport must be recognized for high school participation by the State High School Association (or, if within a US territory or possession, by an NFHS Affiliate Association).
-
No coverage is provided for the coaching or managing of any professional sport or activity.
What is the Coverage Territory?
The general liability and accident policies protect the member coaches while in the United States, its territories and possessions. Coverage also applies while coaching temporarily outside the US as long as the sport is recognized by one of the State High School Associations or NFHS Affiliate Associations.
When is the Insurance Plan effective?
The general liability and accident policies cover member coaches during their Individual Membership period. The membership period is one calendar year from the date the properly completed application and appropriate fees are received by the NFHS.
